Marooned on the beach by the tide, thousands of starfish
were dying. Seeing their plight, a young beachcomber
began picking them up, on by one, and throwing them
back into the water. Watching this seemingly futile effort,
an observer remarked, "There are thousands of starfish
out here. You can't possibly make a difference." The
young man picked up another starfish and, tossing it back
into the waves, said, "It made a difference to that one."
